The purpose of the banned book project was to learn about censorship in books. Each person in the class had to pick a book that had been banned somewhere due to LGBTQIA+ content, sexually explicit content, witchcraft, etc. The book that I chose was Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. This book was banned because of LGBTQIA+ characters. It was about this in the closet gay high schooler named Simon Spier. Throughout the book, Simon emails another gay guy from his school, but he doesn't actually know who he is. During the project we had to write multiple reflections, make a bookmark, and at the very end of the project we had huge project with the entire team. Everyone had to bring an item that had to with their book. Since the main character of my book was gay, I brought in rainbow cupcakes. I had a bit of a hard time with the project. The deadlines for reflections came up out of the blue so I just didn't do them. This lowered my grade in humanities down to an F which really took a toll on me. Although, after realizing how low my grades were, I ended up doing all of the work and turning them in late. I'm actually really proud of myself for taking responsibility for my actions an doing what needed to be done. Usually I was have just gotten upset about the grades but would never actually do anything about them. The easiest part of this project was probably the book mark, which I am actually very proud of. I was procrastinating the majority of the project so I ended up doing that the day it was due. On one side I wrote the title of the book and who wrote it in black and red. Then on the other side of it I drew a rainbow and wrote that the book was banned for LGBTQIA+ content. It was surprisingly high quilt so I am pretty proud of it. To be honest I didn't actually read much of my book during the project. In fact, at the very moment that I am writing this, I still haven't finished the book. This happened because first of all, i got my book late, and second of all, as I have mentioned many times during this refection, I procrastinated. I really did want to finish it though, so I made a promise with myself that I would try to read it every night before I went to bed. But, I would always end up taking out my phone and watching an episode of Grey's Anatomy. then once that episode is over I tell my self just one more episode and then the next thing I know its three am. If I could change one thing about this project it would be to get more time to read it in class. We only got to read our book towards the end of the project so I kind of forgot about the whole thing until a reading reflection was due. It not just that it would have helped me with the project, but it was actually very relaxing. The air in the room was calm and I just got lost in my book. This project was actually very enjoyable and enlightening. It was unbelievable to see not only how banned book there are out there, but what types of book are banned. While I was searching for a banned book to read, I found out that a book series that I used to read as a kid called Bad Kitty was banned. I could't even fathom why there would ever be any reason to censor it. What was also fun about this project was the potluck. In someone's book the main character ate pot brownies, so they brought in brownies in a pot. All in all, I really enjoyed this project and learned a lot form it.
